It always seems like winter goes by in a flash because there are so many projects to get done before the majority of our visitors arrive for summer fun. We enjoy pleasing our guests, helping them plan their visit, and introducing them to our lovely island; but it is a cruel irony that those of us in the hospitality industry rarely get to enjoy the same summer activities as our guests do.
Tom Murphy, new owner of Outdoor Odysseys, decided our staff should have the opportunity to experience at least one of the most popular activities on the island, so he invited us all out for some sea kayaking. Anna Maria arranged for someone to answer the phones, housekeeping worked like fiends to get all the rooms freshened and cleaned, innkeepers cleaned up the breakfast dishes and scoured the kitchen, and we all met up for an afternoon of fun – a RARE treat. In fact, no one can remember when the entire staff of the inns was gathered together for an afternoon off premises.
Unfortunately, the Coho crew and one innkeeper could not join us, but Tom picked up the twelve inn crewmembers in his van and we enjoyed the scenic drive to San Juan County Park with the giddy excitement of playing hooky. In no time, we had the kayaks on shore and we were all outfitted with PFDs, spray skirts and paddles.
Almost half the group had never been kayaking before, so some were a little apprehensive, but Tom’s confident and simple instruction put everyone at ease. It only took five minutes of paddling before everyone was thoroughly exhilarated and loving every minute.
What a thrill for us to see the island from so close on the water; we silently glided by majestic madronas and firs, spotted eagle’s nests, deer, and starfish, and breathed in fresh salt air. It was an afternoon of rejuvenation, affirmation, and reconnection for all of us. A hearty thanks goes out to Tom of Outdoor Odysseys!
We hope everyone who visits will have time to experience the soul soothing peace of a guided kayak trip during their stay – no experience necessary.
