The town is always lovely in December, with storefronts decorated and lights twinkling everywhere. There’s no trace of the hustle and bustle of mainland cities – a peaceful calm fills the air, and there is truly a sense of joy everywhere on the island.
Saturday, December 17: Final Farmer’s Market of the Year. “Eat Locally” is a way of life for many residents in the San Juan Islands. This local Farmers’ Market gives access to delicious island-raised produce, berries, colorful bouquets, eggs and dairy products, as well as fresh seafood, shellfish and meats. The market also features freshly cooked and prepared foods made from local ingredients, including grass-fed burgers, hot sausages, baked goods, pizza, crafts, and more! The market moved indoors to the Friday Harbor High School, 10am -1pm. From January through April it’s held on the first Saturday of the month only.
Saturday, December 17: San Juan Community Singers. Some of the world’s best holiday choruses are highlighted in San Juan Singers annual holiday concert on the Whittier Stage, 7:30 pm. From Handel’s Messiah to Rutter’s Gloria (island brass players will accompany the singers during the latter), plus a selection of familiar carols and songs. December 16 through December 24: Island Stage Left presents “Omnium Gatherum or From the Sublime to the Ridiculous.” It is the season for giving – Island Stage Left gives islanders and visitors top quality professional theatre productions – free of charge all year round. This year’s Christmas production is a splendid celebration intended to warm hearts, tickle funny bones and kindle the spirit of the season. Performances are at the Roche Harbor Pavilion, Friday – Sunday, December 16,17, 18, and Wednesday – Saturday, December 21 – 24. Times: 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday – Saturday and 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. Christmas Eve performances are at 4:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., with seating by reservation only.
