Soroptimists Fund WIC Vouchers for Farmers Market
San Juan island has the largest year-round population of the 172 islands that compose San Juan County, yet there are only about 6400 people here. But what’s interesting is that on this one island of 6400 people, there are over 135 non-profit organizations. Need we say that with all these organizations needing help, money can be a little tight in this small community?
One of the very active and visible non-profit groups is Soroptimists International of Friday Harbor, whose mission is to improve the lives of women and children at home and around the globe. Here on the island, they provide scholarships for women, funding for women and families in need, free ferry passes for cancer patients going to the mainland for treatment and much other needed assistance.
This weekend, for the first time, they will be providing vouchers for WIC (Women, Infants, Children) recipients at the Farmers Market, so those women will be able to purchase plenty of fresh, locally-grown produce for their families. Soroptimists will match the dollar amount issued by the county for each registered recipient.
Soroptimists members work hard through out the year to earn money to fund all these programs, and this is just another example of how a little money does double duty by supporting not only the WIC recipients, but also the local farmers. It’s a win-win deal.
Stop by the Soroptimists booth and say “hi” if you go to the farmers market this weekend.
