Keeping Pets Cool at The Tucker House

0

San Juan Island has been experiencing a heatwave!  Of course if you are from Texas or Florida visiting us, you might disagree. We like to make sure that our furry friends are keeping cool and not getting overheated. The Tucker House has a dog park as part of our bed and breakfast and it offers lots of shade for hot summer days. Below are a couple of tips to keep your pets cool this summer.

Ensure that your garden or yard has some shady spots for your outdoor cat to enjoy. They will find them readily enough, provided you supply them. Water should always be easily accessible and available in the outside area, as well as indoors.

  • If you have an outdoor cat, be scrupulous about checking your greenhouse or shed before closing the doors. These buildings are often uninsulated or unventilated and this might prove fatal if you accidentally lock your cat in the building.

Shelter from the Sun for your Dog

Your dog might enjoy a little sunbathing, but she ultimately needs a cool, shady spot to relax. Prolonged sun exposure not only leads to heat exhaustion, it can also cause sunburn. The best thing is to offer shelter. Shade from trees is nice, but not perfect. An actual structure is better. The addition of a fan will help further cool things down. If possible, put the shelter in a shady area to keep it extra-cool. Of course, the most ideal shelter is in your home. If possible, install a doggie door to allow easy indoor access.
