Fresh Flower Vendor Visits Weekly at Friday Harbor Inn
In our August 5th post we mentioned how people are always stopping by to visit the inn. On Wednesdays we look forward to a visit from long-time islander Rolf Thorson. He’s a real island character, well known for his beautiful gardens on Waldron Island. He explains that his name means “son of Thor, who was the guy who hurled the lightening bolts” in Greek Mythology.
Nothing so aggressive for THIS Thor. He’s seen every week in Friday Harbor with his hand-made wooden cart brimming with achingly beautiful flowers. He wheels it through town, even up the steep hill to Harrison House and Tucker House Inns, just so we can select fresh cut flowers for our guests’ breakfast table. All that walkin’ and wheelin’ – must be why he remains so wiry and trim!
Rolf has been living on Waldron since 1948, growing flowers for over 20 years now. He keeps a little notebook stashed in his pocket, and carefully notes our purchases each week. At the end of the month, he tears out the page, hands it to me, and says, “just send a check.” But get this: there’s no street address; it’s just Rolf Thorson, Waldron Island. Everybody knows everyone else there on the island, so there’s no need for street names or numbers – just like “in the good ol’ days.” Hard to imagine in this day and age, isn’t it?
Look for Rolph’s gorgeous bouquets through October.
