Comments Open on Proposed Coal Terminal in Longview

Regulatory agencies are currently accepting comments on the scope of the Enviromental Impact Study for the proposed Longview coal terminal (Millennium Bulk Terminals.)

The proposal would ship 44 million tons of coal across SR 432, 16 new trains a day, and run 730 coal ships per year through the environmentally sensitive waterways of the Columbia River, one of the largest and most important salmon fisheries in the world. (Remember, our Southern Resident Orcas eat ONLY salmon.) Many of the impacts are similar to those we’re facing at the Gateway Pacific Terminal in Bellingham.
The comment period is open until November 18th. In addition to saying NO to dirty coal, this is your opportunity to tell decision makers how coal export will affect you and your community. Impacts to air quality, traffic congestion, water quality, river recreation, and our climate are just a few of the vital things that you can ask to be considered in the EIS.
There will be five public hearings on the matter, and Columbia River Keeper is planning rallies at all five.  Click on their website for details of each. To comment electronically, you can use the simple forms at Columbia River Keeper or Power Past Coal. There will be five public hearings around the state. Please click here to review the schedule and RSVP for a hearing near you.

Many of the impacts are similar to those we’re facing with the proposed coal terminal at Cherry Point, and we must again ask for them to be thoroughly studied. Your voice can make a difference in what the regulatory agencies include in the Environmental Impact Study. Please speak out now!

Thank you for posting this! The deadline for scoping comments is next Monday, November 18. So far, they have 83, 000+ comments. It’d be great if that number matched those for the Gateway Pacific Terminal – 125, 000! Thanks again for getting the word out!

You are most welcome, Shaun, and thank you for posting. We are extremely concerned about the long-term impacts of these proposed terminals, and hope that enough people will be far sighted enough to think beyond the initial economic spurt they may create.
